When Tinker Meets Stenciller
14/02/2008What would Banksy do with something like this? Probably not much – but if it were commercially available I could imagine even more baby-Banksys than there are now, and Paris is already rife with pochoiristes. Mr Partington’s website shows another interesting aerosol-based “sculpture” – a paintgun. I use quotations only because I wonder if the devices are meant to be art in and of themselves, rather than simply very cool tinker-gadgets. Sure, the concept is cool, but it’s also as thin as the paint on the ground if you’re looking for any deeper commentary.
That said, the briefcase has some potential for large public interventions. Have a hundred or so accomplices stamp out a specified location simultaneously, you could be in for some curious reactions. Besides, there’s something fun about streetart underfoot, rather than on-the wall. It’s less invasive, semi-cached, self-effacing: you have to bend your neck to take it in, so while it asks less attention up front, it requires more to engage. Multiply that with a tool like this and a well staged event, and bingo. Someone should sent a prototype to Truth.com.
